Dear Readers,

As we approach the UN Biodiversity Conference in Cali, Colombia, from 21 October to 01 November 2024 with the overall theme of ‘Peace with Nature’, the global attention is focused on developing actionable strategies to meet the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework targets agreed at the CBD COP 15. This Conference, amongst others, will also deliberate on the interlinkages of biodiversity, health and climate change. The theme for World Environmental Health Day 2024, “Creating Resilient Communities through Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation” complements these objectives.

In this twenty-ninth issue of our newsletter, we are excited to share several key features along with project updates. Our spotlight article delves into the Eco-Gender Gap, exploring how women’s leadership in sustainability is shaping environmental health and conservation. Another article examines how applying design thinking principles can enhance communication strategies for managing sustainable resources.

We also feature two films: one showcasing the vibrant biodiversity of Point Calimere, and another exploring how agroforestry supports sustainable livelihoods. Additionally, we introduce the Wetland Word Map, a visual representation of the diverse names for wetlands across India in different languages and dialects, reflecting the profound connection between local communities and their natural environments.

We hope you find these features as insightful and inspiring as we did while developing them.

Warmly,
Editors

The Eco-Gender Gap: What’s the Buzz?
According to the Global Gender Gap Report 2024 published by the World Economic Forum, as of 2024, global progress towards gender equality stands at 68.5%, showing only a modest 0.1% increase from the previous year. Amidst this broader disparity, a significant topic that continues to gain attention is the 'eco-gender gap’. But what does this gap mean for environmental sustainability, and why should we care?

Effective Communication in Sustainable Resource Management through Design Thinking
From Ideas to Impact
"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works." — Steve Jobs

The quote emphasises that the essence of design lies in its functionality and effectiveness, not merely its aesthetics. In sustainable resource management, the challenge is often to translate complex data and technical concepts into formats that are clear, accessible, and compelling. Design thinking plays a crucial role here by serving as the bridge between raw data and meaningful understanding.

Wetland Word Map of India
The diverse terms used to describe wetlands in different geographical regions show the close relationship between local communities and their natural environment, which is often reflected in their language. Inspired by this diversity, we created the Wetland Word Map. The map was officially launched during the 'Regional Workshop on Conservation and Wise Use of Wetlands for Southern States and Union Territories under Sahbhagita Mission' in Hyderabad. It also honors the ongoing International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022–2032). The Word Map is a growing database, and we invite you to contribute. Write back to us with the names used for wetlands in your hometown!

A film on Biodiversity and Beyond: The Story of Point Calimere
Discover Tamil Nadu’s first Ramsar Site, Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary! Spanning 38,500 hectares, this vibrant sanctuary is a haven for over 0.1 million migratory birds, including the rare Spoon-billed Sandpiper. It’s a crucial nesting ground for Olive Ridley Turtles and home to one of South India’s largest populations of blackbucks. Beyond its breathtaking wildlife, Point Calimere plays a key role in protecting coastal communities and supporting local livelihoods through fishing, salt production and eco-tourism.

A film on Agroforestry for Sustainable Livelihood
In 2014, India made history by adopting the world’s first national agroforestry policy, transforming rural farming. By integrating trees with crops and livestock, agroforestry boosts productivity, reduces deforestation, and strengthens climate resilience. Discover how these initiatives are driving sustainable livelihoods and ecological balance in four Indian states.

Sea Food Habit | Conservation and Sustainable Management of Coastal and Marine Protected Areas Project | Published in 2016
In light of upcoming environmental days—International Coastal Clean-up Day (Sept 21), World Food Day (Oct 16), and International Day for Climate Action (Oct 24) we’re sharing a short film from one of our old project Conservation and Sustainable Management of Coastal and Marine Protected Areas (2012-2017). Created by media students from Gujarat University, the film explores how the local extinction of fish species impacts coastal communities' food habits and livelihoods. It highlights the importance of marine biodiversity, aligning with themes of food security, climate action and environmental sustainability.
